Crew: Max, Tennyson, Lewis, Mari, Anzak and Geoff.
With it being the last day of the school holidays for Max and Tennyson, I invited them—along with Anzak—out on Halo for a boys’ fishing trip. Tennyson’s friend Lewis also joined us, accompanied by his mum Mari.
We cast off from Chaffers Marina at 1130 hrs and headed out into Wellington Harbour, hoisting the No. 3 jib once clear. Conditions were pleasant with a light southerly, and Max did a great job on the helm for most of the sail across towards Point Halswell.
Before long Anzak put a line out and almost immediately hooked our first fish—a nice kahawai. That set the tone for the day and caused plenty of excitement on board.
After rounding Point Halswell we dropped the jib and picked up the club mooring in the shelter of Kau Bay.
Then the serious fishing began, with four rods set and lines hanging eagerly over the side. Anzak was kept busy helping the boys with baiting hooks, untangling lines and offering plenty of patient instruction.
All up we caught around ten fish—mostly spottys—along with a snapper and a blue cod – which were undersized and carefully returned to the sea.
Lunch followed, and then it was straight into the water for Max and Tennyson, who thoroughly enjoyed a refreshing swim.
At 1530 hrs we slipped the mooring and motor-sailed back to Chaffers Marina. Max was very keen to take his spottys home, but after some gentle persuasion he agreed they were better off back in the water 🙂
