Crew: Marion, Shanon, Caroline, Libby, Shannon, Geoff.
Forecast: Southerly 2 kts increasing to 18 kts in the afternoon.
We have entered Halo in the Waikawa Women’s Regatta to be held on 12–13 September in Queen Charlotte Sound. Marion will be on the helm and, once again, has organised a great crew.
From left to right in the photo are Sharon, Marion, Libby, Caroline and Shannon.

We all met up at Chaffers Marina at 10:00 am on Saturday. After introductions, we sorted out our life jackets and went through the safety briefing.
After rigging the No. 3 jib and setting up the spinnaker sheets and gybe preventer, we eventually cast off at 1115 hrs. Crew positions were Caroline on bow, Sharon on mainsheet, Shannon and Libby on sail trim, Marion on helm and Geoff as coach.

Once we sailed out of the shelter of Mount Victoria, we picked up a nice breeze of around 10-12 kts and did a few practice tacks, with the crew soon settling into their roles.

Caroline then rigged the medium spinnaker and we headed downwind. The kite hoist went well.

Marion suggested we try a gybe. I assisted Caroline as we gybed the kite, followed by Sharon working the mainsheet as we gybed the mainsail. Everything went very smoothly.

We then hoisted the jib, dropped the spinnaker and turned back up the harbour. Zigzag, with skipper Angela, was also out doing their women’s crew practice sail.

All too soon it was time to head back to the marina before the southerly and rain arrived.

After dropping the sails, we motored into the berth at 1330 hrs

Murray joined us for the debrief, where we discussed logistics for the regatta over tea, coffee and snacks.
We all agreed that it had been an enjoyable and successful training sail, with everybody looking forward to getting out on the water again for the next practice.
