In preparation for our upcoming trip to Nelson, I motored Halo round to Evans Bay yard for a quick slip to give the bottom a clean. Phil had just finished cleaning Grenadier and kindly stayed on to give me a hand.
After giving the hull a good scrub with soft brooms, it became obvious the grime wasn’t going to come off easily. At that point it was clear the boat was due for a repaint with fresh antifoul rather than just a wash.

Sven then water-blasted the hull and moved Halo with the travel lift into a cradle in the yard, ready for the antifoul work.

The hull was then fully cleaned and sanded in preparation, and I popped round to Barton Marine to pick up 4 litres of International ‘Ultra 2’.

When I returned to the yard I was surprised to see Grenadier now parked up alongside Halo. Phil had decided to follow suit and do his antifoul as well.

I also decided to have the prop treated with Prop Speed — which meant another trip to Bartons.

After fitting a new zinc anode on the shaft, we were ready to go. Sven loaded Halo onto the travel lift and we launched the boat.
Somewhat worryingly, when I went to start the engine the starter motor initially spun but didn’t seem to engage. Hmm. On the second attempt it caught and the engine burst into life.
With a Cook Strait crossing planned for tomorrow, there was no time to have it checked by TS Marine — we’ll just have to hope for the best!
