Waitangi Day Harbour Cruise – 6 Feb 2025

Crew: Geoff, Graciela, Jenny, Jono, Shalini, Isabelle, Max, Janya.

Met Service Forecast: S 10 kts rising to 15 kts early afternoon.

After doing a safety briefing and kitting out everybody with life jackets (thanks for the loaners Phil) we cast off from Chaffers at 1150 hrs. Glassy water in the marina.

We hoisted the mainsail and cruised over to Oriental Bay. Lots of boats there enjoying the Waitangi Day holiday. The Shacklel family were on their big motorboat Manta and some Evans Bay boats were having a social raft up.

We headed out into the harbour where there was a nice breeze and hoisted the #3 jib.

We had an impromptu man-over-board practice when Jono’s hat flew off into the water. Then we continued a nice sail across the harbour towards Ward Island.

The club mooring was unoccupied so Jono picked up the buoy. We had lunch on Halo in the shelter of Ward Island. We were greeted by a large pod of dolphins swimming past us.

Max was keen to do some fishing so we put some squid bait on a couple of hooks and dropped the line. Great excitement! We caught a nice big kahwai. We wrapped it in a plastic bag and put it in the fridge for Jenny and Jono’s dinner.

The southerly was coming up so we decided not to launch the dinghy. We cast off from the mooring and with Max on helm we motored over to the shelter of Kau Bay. Picked up the club mooring and the kids enjoyed jumping off the boat for swims.

At 1545 hrs Jono released the mooring and we motored home to the marina, docking at 1615 hrs. A lovely family outing.
