Scorching Bay – 8 Jan 2024

Crew: Geoff, Graciela, Jenny, Isabelle, Max.

Forecast: Northerly 10 kts in the morning increasing to 15 kts gusting 25 kts in the evening.

First day’s sailing with the grandies for the year. We cast off from Chaffers at 1035 hrs with Graciela’s steady hand on helm and hoisted the no. 3 jib and one reef in the mainsail in preparation for the afternoon’s expected wind increase.

As we headed towards Pt Jerningham Max asked could we do some fishing? Sure, I said, and set up the rod with the spinner. Isabelle and Max kept a close eye on the line waiting for action. Based on past experience I wasn’t very optimistic but all of a sudden we noticed some pulling on the line. Great excitement!

Jenny caught the action on video:

Once we had landed the fish (and extracted the hook out of the sole of my shoe) we continued on, round Point Halswell then downwind towards Point Gordon. The wind was getting up but we could see it looked nice and sheltered in Scorching Bay. We dropped the sails and motored into the bay. Graciela went up on the bow and picked up the mooring at 1130 hrs.

We set up the cockpit table and enjoyed an early lunch. I decided against launching the dinghy but the kids kept themselves busy doing art competitions and Isabelle entertained us with her new magic tricks.

At 1300 hrs we packed up the boat, Max started the engine and we headed home. Motoring into a breezy headwind initially with just me on deck.

Once we rounded the point the wind eased and the kids came back on deck to enjoy the sunshine. Max was keen to do some helming as we cruised around Oriental Bay.

We docked Halo safely back at Chaffers at 1340 hrs. A great family outing with our lovely grandchildren who are growing so fast 🙂
