Harbour Sail – 2 Sept 2023

Crew:  Marion, Anastasia, Patricia, Katherine, Murray and Geoff.

Forecast: Northerly 15 knots, easing to 10 knots in the morning, and to variable 5 knots early afternoon. Southerly 10 knots developing late afternoon.

The plan was to have a practice sail in preparation for the upcoming Waikawa Women’s Regatta. After spending some time rigging the boat and chatting about sailing etc, we cast off from Chaffers at 1100 hrs with Marion on helm, Anastasia on bow, Patricia and Katherine on sail trim. Murray and I keeping out of their way.

At first the wind was a very light northerly as we zigzagged our way into the centre of the harbour with the No. 1 Genoa hoisted. As we passed Pt Jerningham we could see the dark shadow coming up Evans Bay towards us indicating an imminent southerly change. At 1140 hrs the southerly suddenly arrived with a pleasant 10 kts.

After a few more tacks into Evans Bay we turned for the downwind run. Anastasia did a great job hoisting our maxi spinnaker which flew beautifully with Patricia and Katherine on trim.

After the drop we turned for a fast close reach back towards the marina with a nice 10-13 kts breeze. We docked Halo back in her berth at 1250 hrs.

We all agreed it was a lovely morning on the water and a very worthwhile practice for the Waikawa Regatta.
