Crew: Geoff, Graciela, Marcia, Hunter.
Forecast: Northerly 15 knots. Sea slight.
Marcia and Hunter are visiting us from the deep south (Manapouri) so we took the opportunity to take them out on Halo to experience some sailing and see Wellington from a different perspective.
We cast off from Chaffers Marina at 1021 hrs. Graciela and I hoisted the No. 3 Jib and mainsail, turned off the engine, and we sailed out into the harbour with Marcia trying helming for the first time.
As we cleared the shelter of Port Nicholson the wind came up a bit strong so I put a reef in the main to make for a more comfortable ride. We then had good sailing north up the harbour as Marcia became more confident on the helm.

At 114 hrs we arrived in the shelter of Somes south and picked up the club mooring. We turned on our new diesel heater and enjoyed a nice relaxing lunch break
Hunter noticed some large swarms of little fish swimming around the boat as well as some interesting seagulls with black and white tail feathers swimming around the rocks (Black-billed gull | Tarāpuka?).

After a nice relaxing lunch we cast off from the mooring at 1300 hrs and sailed downwind back towards Wellington with Marcia once again on helm. Hunter and I put out the fishing line with a spinner in the hope of snaring a kawahai but no bites.

We tied up at the Chaffers dock at 1400 hrs. Great to enjoy another sunny winter’s day in Wellington!
