Matiu / Somes Island 27 Feb 2023

Crew: Peter, Caroline, Mark, Jane, Geoff and Graciela,

Today: Variable 5 knots in the morning. Southerly 10 knots developing about midday then rising to 15 knots in the afternoon.

Peter and Caroline’s friends, Mark and Jane, were visiting Wellington so we took the opportunity to take them out for a harbour cruise. Mark has sailed on Halo once before when we did our first Cook Strait Crossing in 2016.

We cast off from Chaffers at 1019 hrs in a beautiful calm day and motor sailed out into the harbour. Once we passed Evans Bay we picked up a light breeze and sailed with the No. 3 jib and full main towards Matiu / Somes Island with Mark on helm.

We sailed round Mokopuna Island and picked up the club mooring. After a coffee and muffins we dropped the crew off at the Somes Wharf and Peter and I returned Halo to the mooring and dingyed into the bay.

We enjoyed a hike up to the trig at the top of the island visiting the old quarantine station and the light house and then round the west side of the island to the wharf. Back on the boat Caroline put on a yummy lunch for us. After packing up the dinghy we hoisted the sails and cast off from the mooring at 1450 hrs.

The southerly had really kicked in by now and as we sailed out of the shelter of the bay it was blowing 20 kts. We quickly put a reef in the mainsail and had an exhilarating sail back to Wellington with Peter doing a great job on helm.

We arrived back at Chaffers at 1600 hrs just in time for Mark and Jane to shoot off to the airport to catch their flight to Christchurch.
