We cast off from Chaffers Marina at 1730 hrs in a beautiful evening and started rigging the No. 1 Heavy Genoa with full main. Positions were allocated, Peter on helm, Grant on foredeck, Murray on mainsheet, Nina and Anastasia on sail trim. The course was announced as #36: Start … 25P … 4P … 16S … Finish. A good sized fleet of 17 boats signed on for the race.
Just after we had rigged the sails the engine overheating alarm suddenly came on! I noticed that there was no water coming out the exhaust and we turned off the engine immediately.
After circling around carefully avoiding any collisions we had a good start at 1815 hrs on a beam reach in the middle of the fleet and right behind Tortimony, a Davidson 28, who we eventually passed once we got out of their dirty air.
We sailed around Pt Jerningham and then tacked our way up Evans Bay and after four tacks rounded Falcon Shoal at 1850 hrs. The southerly was averaging 15 gusting 20 kts so we decided to not fly the spinnaker but poled out the genoa. We also hoisted the light Genoa No. 1 for a bit of extra speed. Fairly soon it became obvious we would have to gybe to be on the correct course for the Ngauranga mark. We doused the LT Genoa and then gybed the Mainsail and HW Genoa for a good fun run across the harbour.
We rounded the top mark at 1923 hrs and then sailed close-hauled up towards the Container Terminal and then towards mark #16 at Oriental Bay. We crossed the finish line at 2015 hrs just ahead of Charlie, Tortimony, Update and Incantare.
We quickly dropped the sails and motored back to our berth. Still no water coming out the exhaust.
At the Port Nick clubhouse post race drinks, the results were announced. Cantilena won on handicap altough the rum was awarded to Charlie as both Cantilena and White Cavalier had previously won the rum. Halo came 8th on handicap.
