After resting for two nights at Catherine Cove we cast off from the mooring at 0817 hrs and headed down Admiralty Bay towards Te Aumiti / French Pass.
Although the SE wind had eased off considerably from yesterday it was still a stiff 15-20 kts.

As we neared the pass we noted that our tide calculations were correct and it was still flowing in our favour. It was due to turn to the NE at 1005 hrs. We transited the pass at 0908 hrs without any problems. Our speed over ground (SOG) was 8-9 kts.
We passed the big whirlpool known as ‘Jacobs Pool’ but had no problems with the boat slewing.

Once clear of the pass the SE wind continued and we turned off the engine and enjoyed a fast and furious sail at around 7 kts on a beam reach down the coast with the no. 3 jib and two reefs in the main. The wind was blowing 20-30 kts most of the way.

As we passed Pepin Island at 1248 hrs the wind suddenly stopped and the rain started. We motored the rest of the way down to Nelson and entered ‘The Cut’, motored past the big ships, arrived at the marina and tied up at the visitors jetty at 1514 hrs.
Just in time for Dave’s party tomorrow and then sailing back to Wellington on Monday morning!

Total distance 40 nautical miles.
