The start line for this race was between the committee boat (Pania) and the orange flag. Halo started first over the line – woohoo! We had the spinnaker ready to go but with the wind coming from SE we just pressed on ahead with the No. 1 Light Genoa on a beam reach. By the time we rounded Pt Halswell Usurper and Jesse James were ahead of us as we then sailed close reached into the wind making the Front Lead mark after four tacks. After we rounded the mark we hoisted the maxi spinnaker and made good progress on the run towards the next mark off Sunshine Bay catching up with Saucy Sausage as the wind started dying out. We kept the kite up as we sailed west on a reach towards Somes Island.
On the second loop around the Sunshine Bay the wind had come up again so we switched to the medium spinnaker for the run. After rounding Somes mark again we the beat our way up towards Falcon Shaols with Grenadier hot on our heels.
Bugger! The Interisander was steaming into the harbour on a collision course with Halo. We had to tack back to avoid it and then noticed the Blueridge ferry coming out of the harbour also on a collision course with us. After another tack we were finally clear of them and continued the race.
As we rounded Pt Halswell we managed to keep Grenadier behind us as we sailed past the finish line.
A great result for Halo. Second on handicap!
