EBYMBC Commodores Cup 13 March 2021

Crew: Geoff, Eduardo, Albrecht.

Forecast: Southeast 15 knots, but 10 knots in the harbour. Becoming variable 5 knots everywhere this evening. Sea slight. Fine. Low tide 1153 hrs.

With the light winds predicted we rigged up the No. 1 Light Genoa and prepared the Maxi Spinnaker. Geoff and Eduardo sailed round to Evans Bay and collected Albrecht. This was to be Race 2 of the Commodore’s Cup Race. A ‘Mark Foy’ start with staggered start times for boats depending on heir handicap. Halo’s start number was #29.

We had a good start after our number came up and we quickly hoisted the Maxi Spinnaker in the light south easterly. Positions were Geoff on helm with Albrecht and Eduardo on sail trim. As the wind drifted round towards the east we had to drop the spinnaker and we hoisted the Genoa. The wind continued moving round toward the north east as we beat our way towards the top of Somes island for a starboard rounding. At this stage Wakarere, who had started before us, was the only boat still ahead of us.

After we rounded the island we hoisted the kite again and with a speed boost were able to pass Wakarere on the run back to Evans Bay. Halo, in turn, was however passed by Usurper with their red kite by the time we entered Evans Bay. After rounding Pt. Halswell we gybed the spinnaker but with the wind changing direction again (!) we eventually had to douse the kite and pole out the Genoa for a while before taking the pole down again and flying the genoa on the port tack before poling is out again and finally finishing the race in second place behind Usurper. The variable wind certainly kept us busy but we were happy with Halo’s result. A great day out on the water.
