Picton to D’Urville Island – 28 March 2018

Crew: Geoff, Graciela.

Forecast Stephens: Northwest 15 knots west of Stephens Island Wednesday morning, then becoming northwest 15 knots but southwest 15 knots in the west Wednesday afternoon.

We departed Picton at 0800 hrs. Calm, cloudy morning to start with then the head wind picked up as we motor sailed up thoiugh Queen Charlotte Sound.

Leaving Picton

At 1237 we entered the gap at Cape Jackson. The tide was against us as we battled against the waves. We put the engine into full throttle and suddenly it died! Mmm strange. We turned around and started the engine. No problems. After a bit of trial and error we found the engine was fine as long as we didn’t exceed 3000 rpm when it appeared to be starving of fuel. Ok we can do this. We eventually transited the channel at 1250 hrs.

After that excitement we had a relaxing motor sail in a light breeze past Cape Lambert, Alligator Head, Clay Point and then across Admiralty Bay. We picked up the mooring at Catherine Cove at 1700 hrs.
