Matiu Somes Island with Villoutas & Helen 28 Jan 2017

Crew: Sandra, Cecilia, Vaite, Auntie Helen, Graciela, Geoff

Wellington Marine Forecast: Southerly 10 knots, turning northerly 10 knots late afternoon, rising to 20 knots late evening

We all met on Halo at Chaffers at 10.30am. Wind was almost non-existent so we prepared the No. 1 LT Genoa and after safety briefing we departed Chaffers Marina 1107 hrs and motored out into Lambton Harbour. Slight northerly breezes came up so we were able to sail at times out to Somes Island. Put the fishing line out with the spinner but no bites at all this time.

Arrived Somes Island 1220 hrs and dropped the anchor near the jetty on the north side. After lunch Sandra, Vaite, Cecilia and Graciela went ashore in the dinghy and went for a walk around the island. Geoff had a swim and inspected the hull and wiped off the thin layer of algae. Checked the anode – all good.

Girls returned and Sandra had a swim followed by a hot shower with Peter’s solar shower.

Weighed the anchor and left Somes island 1509 hrs. Surprisingly, the wind had changed to a nice 8-10 kts southerly so with Vaite doing a great job on the helm we sailed back towards the container terminal reaching speeds up to 6.4 kts. Arrived back at Chaffers Marina at 1624 hrs. Excellent sailing!
