Met Service Forecast : Northwest 25 knots gusting 35 knots rising to 30 knots gusting 40 knots in the morning, then easing to 20 knots early afternoon. Northwest rising to 25 knots gusting 35 knots again in the evening. Rough sea, easing for a time in the afternoon. Poor visibility in rain developing in the morning, then becoming fine in the afternoon.
Windfinder Forecast: 12 kts gusting 24 at midday (see image below) – As usual, more accurate than Met Service.
Great race start. With the Mainsail and No. 3 Headsail rigged and Paul managing the racetimer, we were the first boat over the start line on a starboard tack close to Shoal Pile. We’re in the lead!
We tacked to keep up the east side of the Evans Bay where we reckoned the northwesterly was stronger. Unfortunately this wasn’t, in retrospect the best move, as we soon lost our lead with boats on the west side charging ahead of us.
Rounded Pt. Halswell and with a 15 kts northwesterly made good progress across the harbour. Rounded the Rear Lead to port and then Ward Island to port. Peter took over helm while Geoff navigated with the OpenCPN Chartplotter. Unfortunately we took the tack too soon and had to make a second tack on the north side of Ward Island to avoid the shallow part north of the island. The boats following behind us followed suit!
Back across the harbour we entered Evans Bay and then rigged the red Spinnaker. Tried out the Reaching Strut (jockey pole) for the first time although it wasn’t really necessary as we weren’t reaching enough. Crossed the finish line 5th place behind After Midnight, Airlift, Temptation and Saracen but ahead of Shogun, Coriander, Andal and Kingklip.
The good news is that Halo is currently coming 3rd overall in the Series. Go Team Halo!
