I purchased the In-Hull Transducer kit for installation of a NASA Marine Clipper Depth Sounder. The sounder doesn’t require drilling a hole in the hull or hanging it over the transom. It has a nice big display and is a lot cheaper than alternatives such as Raymarine. This seemed like the best solution for Halo, our Whiting 29 GRP yacht.
The transducer is mounted inside the hull in a piece of pipe meaning it can be easily removed if required and enables the transducer to be positioned vertically even when mounted on the curved hull. The pipe is partially filled with oil which ensures a good air-free contact with the hull.
I installed the kit below the sink in the galley following the supplied instructions. It was a bit fiddly to get the epoxy filler in position and looks a bit messy in the photo but it’s out of sight and has held perfectly well.
The depth sounder works well 99% of the time. The 1% has happened when we were doing our Wellington to Lyttleton passage in over 500 mts sea depth and it showed the depth as just 1 or 2 mts for a few minutes. Mmm, maybe there was whale swimming under the boat. 🙂
PD. As of May 2024 it’s still functioning perfectly and I’m very happy with this purchase.
